1) Your name can be anything you want. I went with a regular name like Clint, but there are Feds who call themselves Tiacha, EnterAwesome, BigCDizzle, Fingerguns, and Shawn T. Hutchins, so obviously you can just go with whatever handle you like.

2) I advise you to pick the United States as your country.
Spoiler:

3) Jot down whatever e-mail you end up using, because you'll be logging in with your e-mail and password, not with your character name.

4) Normally I wouldn't say anything about passwords, but hacking and phishing have been in the news lately, so use some common sense here, balanced by the fact that you'll have to use this every day with your e-mail.
Spoiler:

5) Click the standard ToS box at the bottom.

I have no idea why this game uses 'captchas.' But as long as we're talking about stuff you need to do, I'll warn you that these come up a great deal in the game.
The trick with them is just to keep hitting the 'cycle' button in the upper right, until you find a pair of words easy to read and type.

Now you have to go back to your e-mail inbox and wait a few minutes. It's usually within 5 minutes.

Once you get the registration, open it up. If you are starting in the
USA, you will get a passport from the current "President" who will tell
you what do next, as far as things that are going on in the game.

Below that there will be a link that you need to click on. This is very
important as it is final proof that not only are you human, but you're
joining in a spirit of honesty and fair play.

Some general thoughts to keep in mind:

There is no rush. There is no 'end-game' content so there's no particular reason to be level 80 as opposed to level 20. If you want to race through the levels, that's fine. If you want to stop and smell the roses, that is fine, too.
Spoiler:

Far more important than anything you do in the game is the meta-game. This is a a game of politics and war, and if you want to accomplish anything, you will need friends. Create an account here if you don't already have one, and join the Federalist Party here and on #IRC channels at #Fedpartychat and #Fedbar.

Before you do anything else-- before you look at your mail, your alerts,
or even start the tutorial, go ahead and look at your home page.

There are two ways to do this. Either click the blank silhouette or
click on the picture of the house located at the very top of the screen,
next to where it says 'EREPUBLIK: the new world.'

Right now, you have no or little experience. It might say :Level 1,
0/10, which means 0 out of 10 experience. This is fine. It is very easy
to zoom through the first couple of levels, so don't worry about that.

Instead, let's go ahead and get you an avatar so you're not looking at a blank silhouette any more.

It doesn't matter what you choose, or even if you keep it, but the
important thing is that you pick something or someone you like. If you
stick with eRepublik, this picture will be the first thing people associate with you.

For example, a woman named Fingerguns in the Federalist Party chose a
picture of Zooey Deschanel for her image. That's the sister of the
world-famous Emily Deschanel of "Bones." Perhaps "New Girl" will end up
lasting as long. I don't know. But the important thing for Fingerguns is
that now most everything she does or writes ends up using a picture of
Zooey Deschanel on it.

How to do it

I learned this bit from a guy named Logamac in the Federalist Party.
He's quite clever with technical details, but more to the point, he is
willing to share his knowledge in his in-game blog, "Sushi Cat News."
One of the best ways you can get ahead is by reading the blogs and
papers that other people have written.

Anyway, what you need to do, to add a picture, is to edit your profile.
Just follow the picture. Look where I have the red arrow. Click on that
button there, and it will take you to the editing screen for your
profile. Then, just pick a picture from your computerFirst Day in eRepublik Icon1 to upload.

If you have none, browse one on the Internet, download it, and then
upload it. I picked a picture from the movie "Enchanted." Pick whatever
you like, as long as it's not Zooey Deschanel.

Alerts

By now you will have noticed those two little red numbered squares next to your picture on the left. (Your numbers may vary, depending on the country you start in.) The first one indicates that you have in-game messages, and the second one alerts you about things taking place that the game believes you should know about.

This might be things like someone sending you money, someone giving you a friend request, or someone commenting on a post you have made. This particular case shows that a fellow named Mercurius100 wants to be my friend.

At first I recommend just adding friends who are in the Fed Party.
Everyone here has been checked out by some 80 year old guy name Hill W. Hill to make sure they are okay. Most other political parties will just want something from you or will want to lord over you.

Use your own common sense here: if your first impression is that someone in another party is being a dick to you, understand that this is who they are and always will be, and be happy they are not a Fed. If you're a decent person yourself, you will always have good experiences with the Fed Party. This I personally guarantee; if I didn't believe it, I wouldn't be writing this walk-through.

You've got mail!

Looking at your messages

Next to your picture should be at least one little red box with a number
on it. If you don't see it, look where I have the first arrow on the
left.

Click on that.

Your mailbox will open. It is very rudimentary, but for now you won't have many messages so it should be easy to navigate.

Next, click where I have the second arrow, the one on the right. You
actually have to click exactly where I am showing. If you click on the
name of the person who sent you the mail, you will go to his or her
homepage instead of to reading the message itself.

You should have at least one message from the in-game president of
whatever country you are in. Go ahead and read what he or she has to
say.

The top news

and other news items

If you look around at various eRepublik tutorials, they will talk to you
about leveling up, about getting a job or going to war and many things
like that. But this is your first day (or first week) in the game. There
is no rush. There will be plenty of time: you can go from level 1 to
level 10 in an hour. I know this, I timed it with my brother. I called
him on the phone and walked him through it.

Far far more important than whether you DO anything your first day is
that you take a look around. Look at the various screens, even if you
have no idea what is going on. You can't kill off your character. Just
make sure you don't accidentally buy anything in the market, but
otherwise you can't hurt yourself by looking around.

And one of the most important places to look around is at other people's blogs and newspapers.

First Day in eRepublik Topnew10

On this screen here I am showing you the 'news feed' area. This lists
articles written in the past couple of days sorted by category. These
categories are politics, economics, warfare, social interactions and for
you the most important category: 'first steps in erepublik.'

When I first joined, I actually did nothing my first day but read those
articles. It doesn't matter if you ultimately decide you are a
politician, soldier, newspaper publisher-- or some combination of all
three-- in all cases it pays to be informed as to what is going on.

Adding a friend

eRepublik is a game of politics and war, and in both cases who you know is always more important than what you know. Countries need alliances, and people need friends. For example, if you saw the first page in this series, I talked about how I ran for Congress and won. Well, I didn't do that in a vacuum: I had people who supported me and who campaigned for me and voted for me. Doing something like running for President or for
Congress takes time and effort, but making a friend does not. (Keeping one might take effort, but making one just takes a smile and a firm handshake.)

Let's go ahead and add Fingerguns as a friend. This tutorial was her idea so she is already predisposed to liking you.

First Day in eRepublik Fglljp10

I have gone ahead and brought up her homepage-- I'll show you how to do that in a minute-- but for now, follow along.

Just like on Facebook or anywhere else, the first step is to add them to your friends list. Here in this picture you can see the little face icon that I have circled on top. When you mouse over it, you get a little pop-up "Add as a friend." Go ahead and click that.

Some people prune their friends list to only people they chat with or message every day; other people add every single person in the game that they come across. Use whatever system you are comfortable with. (Starting out, it is best to stick to having friends in the Fed Party.)

Once you have friends, be it one or one thousand, you'll be able to listen to their 'shouts.' (Your homepage can have up to three feeds, one from your political party, one from your military unit, and one from your friends.)

One last note...

See those double arrows at the bottom?

You can also use someone's homepage to go to their newspaper, if they
have one, and then subscribe to that. If you remember the 'top news'
categories I mentioned earlier, there is actually one more, which is
'newspapers you have subscribed to.' This way you can keep track of what
your friends are saying and doing, or simply partake of such good
newspapers as 'Musing from Cheyenne Mountain.'

The Tutorial

If you look at this picture, you will see I have circled two parts of
the tutorial: 1) working and 2) training. This is because I think you do
yourself a disservice by trying to do too much at once. And here's why:
combat in this game is determined by level. And these levels are
grouped into four ranges called "Divisions."

If you zoom up the levels without first building up your strength, you
will be a weakling compared to other people in your Division. You only
get to train your strength a limited amount per day-- and if you don't
pay the training fee, that means you only get to use one single training
building each day-- and so you might very well end up in Division 2,
level 26, with a strength of 50 or 100. Some very meager little amount.

Look at Fingerguns. I circled her strength so you can see it. She
started the game before you did, and thus has accumulated many more days
of training than you. It is better that you stay in Division 1 and work
on your strength until you are ready to move up.

So take my advice: just click on these two boxes that I've circled each
day until you have a feel for what is going on. In the meantime, keep
reading various feeds and blogs and newspapers, and make any friends you
can.

Training

First Day in eRepublik Lltrgr10

I personally did not find the in-game tutorial very intuitive, nor did I
really understand what was going on at first. So if this is obvious to
you, then skip this section. If not, read along...

Every day you get to train. Eventually you will have 4 training centers.
The other 3 cost gold to use, but this first one is free. It costs gold
to upgrade, but using it is free. To get to it, click on "My Places"
(where I have the red circle) and then click on the second tab, where I
have the red arrow.

Finally, click the green box that says "TRAIN" on the lower right hand corner. Voila! Your strength just went from 0 to 5.

You will notice that you have 'missions' that you can complete in the game. These are located on the bottom left corner of your screen. There is a mission for training, which you have just done.

First Day in eRepublik Llmiss10

Feel free to click on these if you are curious. If you can't do a mission, it will leave it there; you don't forfeit anything if you can't accomplish it right away. The 'training' mission is the middle one, the flexed arm with the bulging bicep.

Working
-- More fun than in real life!

Now this part is a bit harder, because it really depends on what you end up doing in the game. For example, a soldier might end up working on a military commune where he or she gets a token stipend a day but is supplied with food and weapons. A reporter or politician absolutely does not need a job at all.

However, you might want to tour the world, and travel costs money. Also, upgrading your storage bunker costs money. There are some few in-game benefits to having money, so if you feel like acquiring it, then get a job.

Just follow the arrows on this screen.

To get to this screen, click on "My Places" on the top, just above the red circle.
Then, click the red circle if you end up taken to a different place, such as your training ground.
Finally, click by the big red arrow so that you can "Get a job."
