The Life and Adventures of a Proud American Traveller Empty The Life and Adventures of a Proud American Traveller

Post by ScottCoyleSr Tue Jun 03, 2014 12:21 pm

As most of you know I am a Professional Driver and I have decided to share my daily travels with y'all because I am one of the most unique out there in that I am technically the 3rd String Truck Recovery guy at my company ( Backup to the Backup ) and my title specifically is the Local and Midwest Recovery Specialist. I am suppose to be a 40-50 hour a week, home nightly driver but things don't always work out that way as it currently stands I am home only on weekends and even then maybe one day a week.

My point is that I drive more miles then most do in a lifetime and the things I come across make me laugh, cry, kick and scream so I figured it would be a nice diversion for some and maybe even some discussion. So from here on out I will share my photos and videos of my travels.

To start off it is Tuesday June 3rd 2014 @ 14:15 cst. I am not normally out in this area but today is a bit different, I have left my normal operating area centered around Dubuque, Iowa ( from the north St. Paul, Minnesota, to the west Lincoln, Nebraska, to south Monmouth-Galesburg, Illinois and to the east Chicago ) and I stayed in Fort Madison, Iowa down by Keokuk ( Iowa, Illinois and Missouri boarder ) and was instructed after first to go to Monmouth, Il then on to Dubuque, Ia and finally stopping in Waterloo, Ia. Well now the plan is to go on drop my trailer in Beardstown, Il then Bobtail ( no trailer just truck ) to Effingham, Il to pickup a trailer then off to St. Louis and from there back to Dubuque either with or without a load. The main reason that I decided to share this is the last time I went to St. Louis I had an incident which I will share once I take my 30 minute break but that will have to wait til I reach Effingham, so in about 3 hours I will have the story with pictures. See y'all there.

Edited @ 18:16 CST

Well I had planned to tell more but unfortunitely they have redirected me once more now I must drop in St. Louis p/u in Edwardsville and drop it in Granite City and grab a load from there and head as north as I can before I run out of hours....@%#$%#@$%#$%#@$%#@$%

Nearly 12 hours, long enough for a double post I guess lol ...

So back in February ( which wow seems so long ago lol ) I posted this incident to my facebook page ...

Well today wasn't going to bad after being stuck in Lincoln, Il for 15+ hours but then came this 3' x 4' beauty. I was driving out of St. Louis and making some darn fine time if I do say so myself and as I top the hill a semi passing me on the driver side jukes to the left and a flash of silver shifts over to my lane ( center lane of three lanes ) the two cars in front of me manage to avoid it but being as wide as I am their was no chance for me. Semi to my left and passanger cars to my right. Normally I have an exit strategy but traffic was too dense and even though I had as much padding as traffic would allow me to have I didn't have enough time to slow down to a crawl before the last vehicle shift the sheet metal straight in the middle middle middle lane. I was lucky enough to have the cars to the right of me shift over but it didn't matter so I tried to avoid it and was unable.

So once the infamous incident occurs I calmly slowed down to escape to the shoulder as far as I could. Apparently Wentzville Police was made aware of the sheet metal and hadn't had enough time to reach it before I arrived but they quickly arrived within 5 minutes of me stopping and as I placed the last triangle the first patrol car arrived on scene. Myself and three officers tried to remove the debris from underneath my driver side step but to no avail. I even got a bunch of snow down the back side of my pants when I tried to release it from underneath the cab. After an hour of waiting the mechanic from Express Man Services arrived and he along with an officer and myself wrestled for an hour with it and we finally freed it from my truck.

Thankfully only 2 hours wasted, superficial damage and a very wet back side and I was on my way to TA to do a more thorough inspection. It occured on I-70 WB just before exit 210B ( I-70 & Hwy 61 ) ... thankfully I was very familiar with this area and knew a TA was only 8 miles up the road.

Now that I am done telling my story I am off to shower and rather enjoy a nice clean self. Two days without showering plus a back side with more snow then I even thought possible makes me long for the shower. So off I go toward happiness.

* Not to mention shortly after arriving at the TA and as I am backing into a spot some idiot Crete Carriers driver then proceeds to push his way past me as I am backing into a spot.

Along with these 7 photos ...

The Life and Adventures of a Proud American Traveller 1620453_743874532290599_224403205_n

To top it all off there was a scale not more then a couple miles down the road which I would have to pass by to reach the nearest safe location which was a TA truckstop. ( btw incase I didn't write it above this all occured on I-70 just before the end of St. Louis which we refer to US-61N as the edge of St. Louis )

Bringing you forward just shy of 4 months and again another incident occurs in the St. Louis area ( which mind you is why I started this topic, crappy luck I was right that something was gunna happen ) but anyway I digress and here it is ...

So I am going as "safely" fast as I can and I leave Effingham with the trailer and take it to Budwiser in downtown St. Louis ( which is really beautiful ) and after a quick drop I immediately run to Edwardsville and grab another empty trailer and before I can take it the other Budwiser facility in Granite City, Il I must first visit the blue beacon in Pontoon Beach and wash out the trailer ... well no line and instant wash out however as I go to leave I have a major issue it's very tight and my tandems are slid to the end of trailer per the requirements of Budwiser. It's already tight with the gigantic boulder they have placed out front to protect their crappy grass ( meanwhile some years before an #$%#$% decided to put a large drainage inlet just in the apex of your turn ) so as I slide between a broke down semi on my passenger side I must navigate passed this large boulder and make it through the turn well unbeknownst to be there was that large drain in the apex which I couldn't see as it was night time until my passenger side steer tire fell into it. So moral of the story I HATE ST LOUIS!!!!!!!

After no showering since Sunday morning ( ya sexy I know ) and this crap below I took an hour long enjoyable shower once I managed to find a parking spot and get myself into it without hitting anything.

Originally the plan was to leave Montrose, Iowa and head to Beardstown, Illionis with an empty, drop it there and bobtail to the Quad Cities ( Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline and Rock Island ) and then to Dubuque, Iowa and finally finish in Waterloo, Iowa.

As I reached Cargil in Beardstown, Illinois I had to walk through pig poop dirt ( no seriously pig poop ) and get the trailer washed out while dealing with a 20 something large woman with a large chip on her shoulder. I left and proceeded as planned but was forced to turn around and go to Effingham, Illinois and grab an empty then head to St. Louis and then Dubuque, well that didn't happen and captain boss added two more stops and a final pickup to Sioux City. Which is when all this occured. Needless to say I am tired, cranky and going to bed. Night all!

* If ever there was a reason to finish college and get a 4 year degree vs a 2 year degree this is it right here!

The Life and Adventures of a Proud American Traveller Empty Re: The Life and Adventures of a Proud American Traveller

Post by ScottCoyleSr Thu Jun 05, 2014 9:07 pm

After Tuesday shenanigans I got woken up at 6:45am after going to bed at 1-2am not sure. Anyway I got woken up and had to run back to the beer warehouse in Granite City, Il where I loaded up and dealt with a very annoying  woman who honestly bears mention but I spent 2 more hours while they loaded me and it took me about 30 minutes to leave. Before leaving you must scale your truck, trailer and load; where it showed me as legal.

I get to the nearest CAT Scale and turns out I was way over weight on my trailer tandems so I adjust them repeatly until I am legal; extremely important as the last three days ( Tues, Wed, & Thurs ) have been National Inspection to where they have 10,000 additional inspectors checking trucks. As I leave the truckstop I had emailed my boss to clarify he wanted me to bring the load back to our yard. Several hours later I finally got a response. So I drag it up here and before going to bed I check my paycheck but it has been updated yet so I go to bed.

I wake up at 8am and go inside to get my daily marching orders and was told to run over to a local company and shag ( move trailer from dock to yard & visversa ) some trailers which I did and as I put the last one in a dock I am told to come immediately back to the yard because my other boss needs to talk to me.

As I get back I check my paycheck and it's short $200 again which puts me in a bad mood so I go inside and before I can talk about the paycheck issue I must go see the head of safety. As you can figure that is never a good thing especially when your boss comes with you. So for the moment paycheck issue is not on my mind.

When I sit down I am told I will have to pay another $1,000 deductible for the mud hole my truck slipped into, I am of course enraged at this point so as my wise grandfather always says if you have nothing nice to say keep your mouth shut. Well then I am told because of the last incident I am now on notice and if another occurs I can be fired. The frustration and anger reached a boiling point but some how I manage to keep my kool.

The head of safety proceeds to explain why I am a bad employee and that I have had 10 incidents in 16 months. To give you the information here it is ...

Scott Coyle's Claim History Report

02/05/13 - Hit While at Truckstop Showering ( not in truck ) - $641.50 ( MD )
02/12/13 - Hit While at Truckstop Showering ( not in truck ) - $1,633.5 ( NY )
03/12/13 - Hit While at Truckstop / Other driver ran off but I got his information - $716.25
05/20/13 - Was hit by a mattress from a passing vehicle - $1,179.08 ( guy paid in cash to company )
10/29/13 - Slide on Mud deemed preventable - $428.79
11/12/13 - Hit by ice from passing vehicle - $1,014.91
11/27/13 - Dropped Trailer ( did 3 hard tug tests and am on camera ) - $236.51
12/03/13 - Grazed another truck dented bumper ( two small scratchs to our truck ) - $2,431.78
02/05/14 - Road Hazard ( dont recall the incident ) - $1,179.29
05/13/14 - Cargo Claim ( not my fault wasnt my trailer have no responsibility for it ) - $11,352.60
06/03/14 - The last issue that just occured - $1,000
- My boss agrees with me, it was night time and it's a mud hole ( ya doesnt stand out! )

In Red - They claimed I could have prevented it

This all comes to a grand total of $21,814.21 of which they say $4,097.08 was preventable ( they claim it's my fault ) which I am required to pay them another $2,665.30 in damage charges ... well interesting considering that 4 are disputed as work related ... so if I for example break my leg is that preventable and I should charge you guys in full?

So needless to say I was quite angry and I walked out after having to sign a " Written Warning " and was suggested I do trailer shagging permanently which if you have ever seen a shipper or receiver yea lets put me in tighter spots if you feel I am such a risk ... makes sense. Now when you top all this off I have paid a whooping $1,000 to them already and as I get the balance down to $500 they bring on this additional charge and try to threaten me with termination. I don't know about y'all but I think it's time to tell them to shovel the job where the sun dont shine.

Please give input as I am needing unbiased eyes please, JLo your advice is required lol

To clarify some things about those incident's here are the stories involved.

10/29/13 - I was a JBS in Marshalltown and when it rains it gets quite muddy, well in the back area it is very tight and I got onto the slide mud and had to throttle it up a bit and I didn't let off soon enough when it caught the dirt and bearly bent the cab extenders. - Deemed Preventable

11/27/13 - At Hormel and as it began to get really cold my truck of course had it's fits. Well as I pulled the trailer from the door I did three hard tug test's ( which hormel has camera's ) and as I made my turn toward the back the trailer came off the truck and broke the electric box on the trailer ( a 5 minute fix ) when shagging a trailer ( moving trailer within yard ) not a single one gets out and checks the fifth wheel and bearly any do tug test's ( basically putting pressure on the trailer to see if it is connected ) and I was told I should have gone and looked at it, yes when moving a trailer off a yard I check it but 99.99999999999999% of the time a tug test is good enough except as I found out with this truck. I estimate that I have touched no less than 1,000 trailers since taking this position before this incident ( now as a habit even if I am adjusting a trailers position in a door I get out and look so if it happens again I can't be blamed ... yet surprisingly never had an issue since, again I was on camera ) - Deemed Preventable

12/03/13 - At Americold in Cedar Rapids I was told by the staff at that location to park into a spot that was insanely tight as they own the property I complied. There was another one of our trucks parked in the way and I had to get into it with out hitting it or the other two trailers and when doing so I grazed our other trucks mud flap bracket, which mind you doesn't look like I did a thing to not even a suff mark. So I bearly dented the fake chrome bumper with a minor dent about 3" long and maybe a millimeter deep, and put 3 scraps on the plastic portion of the bumper. - Deemed Preventable

** So I was told I am costing the company a lot of money yet when you include only the " Preventable " claims that is $4,097.08 of which I am paying $2665.30 leaving a company cost of only $1,431.78 and if they want to get technical I work on average 69 hours a week and only get paid for 50 hours. I did the math and for 2 weeks ago til the beginning of this position I have lost over $10,000 in unpaid wages. My thought is WTF!

Iowa definitely stands for Idiots Out Wandering Around as they only told me Monday I would be helping third shift Shagging at the Warehouse next door but they didn't specify when I was to have training and so forth so I guess I am just here for no reason lol. Anyway aside from that I got called while relaxing at the moms for the weekend and randomly at noon. Well I had only an hour to shower and drive the 44.6 miles to the yard so I got to it quickly and took the quickest shower I have ever taken. Well I arrived and did a quick run south but on the return a plug for the Trailer Hub popped off and I was leaking air so I got stuck in Davenport.

After waiting there for over an hour I got a call from Breakdown telling me that the Love's Tire Shop told her that they sent a tech and he called back and said that I wasn't in my truck, well that's not true as I never left the truck and was sitting in a position that someone over 100 yards away could see me and I didn't see anyone but never the less the guy showed up an hour later and I wasn't able to do my second load so I shut down and here I sit.

** I had planned to upload some videos I took of stupid people from Friday and today but I wasn't able to get a good enough connection but bear with me as they will be posted as soon as I can **

Post by ScottCoyleSr Tue Jun 10, 2014 8:06 pm

Well so here I sit at my mothers house because I had to leave my job. As you guys know from last Thursday I had an issue with our Head of Safety and was told that if I have another incident I would terminated. Well here is the last incident that got me to where I am now ... Unemployed!

On Sunday I got called at noon while at my mothers, 44.6 miles away and without question I went to work. Working on my day off, what a shock for me, not really but sounds funny to me and those around me. Anyway so I cut short my time off and go to work; still highly irrated but never the less safe enough to drive. I did fine minus the I.O.W.A.'s and delivered my load then sat down for the night at got up at 7am to work.

Then comes Monday I was asked to check in at a local client and grabbed an empty and headed down to Monmouth, Illinois where I dropped the trailer at a client then head to Davenport to another one of our clients and check for another empty trailer. As I was heading through Davenport on US-61 I had a guy pull out in front of myself and several others and we all had to slam on our brakes. We call it a Hard Brake and mind you I was bobtail ( the weight was mainly on my Steer tires so whenever I have to stop quickly that means my Drive tires will lock up easier as the weight is mainly on the front so as physics tell us without a large amount of weight on the rear tires it is easier for them to lock up.

After the remainder of the day I woke up the next morning early as I recieved a call from work and was asked to come in early and talk with my boss. Well I did so and I was told that I am being taken off the road as I am now; per the Head of Safety, a risk and I can't do my job anymore so I have two options, find another company or work next door shagging trailers from the dock to the yard and from the yard to a dock.

So I was quite #$%#ed and I told them I need a couple hours, so I spent the time cleaning out my truck and began looking for a new employer; currently have 15+ potential employers lined up as I have over 20+ work references. When it became common knowledge of what happened I got a show of support from everyone in Operations, Billing, Payroll, and the Shop. The only one's not to show support and stay mute where those who worked under the Head of Safety and I don't fault them but they protested in silence and I will continue to respect them as I don't expect them to stand up to their boss as he is a total @#$%$.

Surprise Sex

Anyway so I am now unemployed and the reason I didn't take the second offer besides the obvious reasons is because the area is very tight and your more likely to cause damage as they are tighter spaces and normally they use a shorter truck that turns far tighter and has amazing views so you can see what you are doing well they broke the normal truck a month ago and had been using a backup truck well that broke yesterday and now they are using an over the road truck ( much larger, less sight and no lights ) well the risk is high enough and with the added risk in using a road truck I wouldn't take that chance, because remember I am such a " Bad Driver ". Either way you get the point. So now I am unemployed.

Happy Fathers Day Scott!

Great Present ... $%@%#$%#$%@#$%#$%#@$5 Argh!

 Facepalm

I was asked why can I be so up beat with all that happens? That's simple I am quite sure I am insane already so it will either take alot to make me snap or it's one more morning before I go postal .. you decide

Good heavens! Sounds like unemployment was the right move imho. And hopefully you won't have any trouble finding another company. My favorite uncle was a semi-driver his entire life; he became a truck mechanic in later years. His son is now a driver and I've heard a few similar stories over the years.

Yup it was the right move and I already got another job offer less than 24 hours since I was given the choice and in actually it is 20 hours since I actually made the choice at 1500 CST yesterday. There are far more horror stories then I can share on here but hopefully this new job will keep me moving as it is a percentage job ( meaning more connected to company income like an owner op ) and they have much better equipment.

You didn't announce your decision to my question ...

Good shit?
Amazing Lightning Strike: https://youtu.be/TDT5CxdjXKo

When: 6/30/14
Where: Wayland, MO @ Flying J Truckstop

That Monday we had a horrible storm cut through the upper midwest ( mainly Iowa ) amd even though it was the second storm of two days I didnt expect to have happrn what did as I entered the tail end near the storms dispersement time which being a hunk of metal weighting 80,000lbs it nearly blew me over with the gusts then as I approach the truckstop where I have to fuel ( under an 1/8th had no chance to reach anywhere else ) I saw this dangerous beauty and managed to catch it on tape! Fastest 50 gallons I have ever pumped lol. It was pouring rain so I had to cross between my truck and trailer without touching metal, granted normally its very rare for a truck to get struck by lightning but all it takes it once. So ya fun not!

The Life and Adventures of a Proud American Traveller Empty Re: The Life and Adventures of a Proud American Traveller

Post by ScottCoyleSr Fri Jul 11, 2014 4:07 pm

Today is a day I want to just jump in front of moving semi, so here it goes boys and girls...

Today is payday and friday which means it should be a good day. I should already be asleep but looks like I have a couple more hours of work. So as most of you know I recently changed jobs because my position was taken away over a mass of controversy and I have been working for a new company for nearly a month. This has caused a couple issues, lower income, less time at home ( out 7 days per trip average right now ) I havent had visitation with my children in almost two months, not just becuase of job change but because my landlord asked if he could have my apartment ( he lived down stairs in the one bedroom and wanted my 3 bedroom because I was only there every 12 days on average just for my visitation so basically it was a storage unit ).

Well I have had an issue paying bills with half the income but handing over the apartment has helped a bit, you could say perfect timing but 27 and visiting my moms couch every 7 days isnt my dream lol. Anyway with that I have to transfer my license to Iowa even though I techincally live no where my new company wants me to have an Iowa license. Here is the kicker I never changed over my CDLfor two reasons, first being that Arizona considers Air Brakes as a part of the CDL so no extra endorsement where as Iowa considers Air Brakes a seperate endorsement which means the state charges me around $70 in a random drawing depending on either I get a 5 or 7 year license; no choice " completely random ", so even though I got my CDL in 2011 through Iowa they want me to retake the Air Brakes test and pay them a huge fee for an endorsement many states have as part of CDL Class A since you have to pass the Air Brakes test to get a Class A.  ( Iowa is the king of red tape ) and if you have an Iowa CDL the state DOT can require me to retake all three written tests and the three physcial tests anytime.

So added to the extra fee and test I have to take within a month of being employed ( July 17th ) I found out Iowa wont allow me to reactivate my CDL like most other states (normally you just provide your current medical card and pay a fee, it took 5 minutes and one form plus $5 to transfer my CDL from Iowa to Arizona ). Anyway you add that with the lack of income for two weeks ( former employer issue claiming they have 45 days, BS its til next normally scheduled paycheck which is weekly friday ) being over charged for a controversial deduction from former employer, most people would have snapped.

Added to that I have to plan to recover and deliever a 3 stop load in Chicago, then pickup another load in Chicago and deiver a 3 stop load in Iowa and Minnesota and out of all 7 places I will be over the next 4 days I have only been to 1 before. So I have to trip plan meaning figure out my route and find the truck routes and call 5 of them for directions. Normally its 1 pick up and 1 delivery per load,  so you can see the issue with these two loads.

Next I have to write my Cool Kids Club article, finish more S.H.I.E.L.D graphics ( about 8 plus 2-4 versions ), recruite to more Team members, and get my eHouse in order ie my Wiki page and articles.

Still fighting with eRep Admins over my old SO account.

Next I plan to post the numberous videos and photos I have been collecting for the last two months to share with y'all.

Finally last but not least I have to find time for my new girlfriend ( might be too adult but its been since before April that I have done more then a " in front of her parents respectful " kiss )

So if your life sucks don't complain becuase that isnt even the full story lol. I am either already nuts or about 15 minutes from Postal! I go  with the first til I wake up in a funny farm.

No problem and btw that was all done on my cellphone, so ya not fun when I had it in full site version of the forums but you can see from my posts here in a bit that it helped me refocus.

So far the list goes:

Update the Ex-Wife on Child Support Issue ( text message )
Take Air Brakes Practice Test ( 6 Times - 2 Versions )
Create New CKC Logo ( Awesome Sause - Cant Touch This! )
Create New Newsletter Theme ( Header, Spacer & Footer completed )

Order Birth Certificate ( Halfway Need Clarification from Vital Statistics )
Trip Planning for 7 x Stops Total ( Route, Close Directions, Esc Routes, Alt Routes, Breaks, Time Line Paperwork & Fuel Stops )
Finish Decking out SHIELD Daily Orders ( Header, Spacer, Footer, Priority Levels, Links & more to come.. )

Currently working on my CKC article then I will be back to finishing my SHIELD Graphics.

After spending countless hours working on my CKC article I have been forced to go piece by piece only to find out this wasn't allowing me to post the full article ... grrrrrr !!!!

Kool Things I've Done:

Benn Dover's Capital Bank of America Logo

Uncle Sam's Mongoose Corporation Logo

Former eUSA Army Site

Jewitt's TVA Group Site

My Former Business - America Corporation

.. there are tons more such as the old RfC logo but all have been lost to history

So I am in Virginia right now and only 20 miles from my delivery and I was driving along I topped a hill and at the top was something I couldn't tell what it was but since I had a car to my left I was unable to merge and tried to slow down but I was forced to try and avoid it and managed to avoid it with my truck but my trailer hit it and I lost one of my rims ... here is the end result ...

I'm sorry you seem to get the fuzzy end of the lollipop. But I love these stories. Keep up the great work Scott!
