Linux
I personally like linux a lot. It really doesnt have any downsides besides some minor compatibility issues. But you dont have to worry about viruses and it has a vast array of features. Anyone else use linux? Thoughts?

Re: Linux
My feeling is that Linux is made for advanced users who'll know how to use its advantages over Windows. I don't think that average user can do as much with Linux as he can do with Windows.
We had to use it for one semester but that wasn't enough to see real power of it.

Well, for the average user of computers, Windows will be probably the best solution. Whereby I've got to say that there are linux contributions for newbs as well. You don't really need to be awesome in programming and stuff to use it. As BN already said, linux systems don't really allow viruses to be killing your PC, that's a very good point for using it.Senor Italaura wrote:My feeling is that Linux is made for advanced users who'll know how to use its advantages over Windows. I personally use - SURPRISE - ubuntu. I started using it as I started studying math. We've had a subject called "Computer-based Mathmatics" which includes creating new algorithm for whatever and similar stuff.
If the average user doesn't like the user interface, there are lots of possibilites to change that. There are linux operating systems with a similar user interfaces as Windows uses.

Re: Linux
We use Solaris, RedHat and Debian for our servers. So, I kind of use Linux/Unix on a daily basis.
But my Laptops and my PCs are all Windows. If you use rather new high end hardware it often lacks of good driver support for Linux and you end up installing Windows.

Re: Linux
I haven't done much formalized work in Linux/Ubuntu yet as part of my course of study. I'll take a formal course in Linux as one of my last courses in my degree.

I have played in many versions, some in college as part of the course, some of friends house, and some of my own installations...
My favorite distro for whatever reason was Yellow Dog Linux that I installed on my ps3 as I found that the other distros I played with had crippling problems.
Stability and compatibility seemed to plague the other distros... for example one of the distros was not compatible with the graphics card on my friends computer...
Red Hat Linux that was used by my college for our OS class generally was less stable then I liked as I could crash the OS accidentally... but at least it could read the graphics card.

Thought I would like to add that my friend who was a great lover of Linux considered Red Hat the enemy...
Meh right.
Personally at the time I considered AOL the enemy.
